Where are emergency lights used?

Emergency lighting is installed to provide sufficient lighting to the exits in buildings when required for evacuation during a power outage. They are backed up by a battery supply that will automatically engage when there is a loss of power.

Emergency lights are commonly found in commercial and industrial buildings or work sites, hospitals, shopping centres, schools, cinemas, multi-level residential complexes and any such buildings where there’s high public traffic or access. They’re usually identified as exit lights and some hall, carpark or stairway lighting.

Emergency lighting is hardwired into the building’s AC power and use the power supply to keep the batteries constantly charged and ready for an emergency.

What is emergency lighting testing?

Emergency lighting testing must be carried out by a qualified electrician, to confirm the building’s supply conforms to Australian standards: AS/NZS 2293.2. These standards dictate that six monthly testing be carried out, including:

  • a visual check of all emergency and exit lights for mains operation,
  • a check of the correct operation of exit lights and to replace faulty lamps as required,
  • operate the test switch or circuit breaker to simulate a power failure,
  • ensure the emergency lighting system shall remain illuminated for not less than 90 minutes.
  • Report any failures and record data in onsite manuals.
  • Record data in electronic format for OH&S auditing purposes.

Once testing has been carried out we can quote to repair or replace any faulty emergency lights, batteries or other components.
