Get serious with faulty electrical products

Australians are a positive lot on the whole. Our 'she'll be right' attitude to life is known around the globe, in fact, Australia is ranked as the third happiest country in the world. (Forbes)

Unfortunately, this easy going nature flows through to area's where we really need to get serious and take action. In the last few years, Australia has had several substantial electrical recalls which affect a large number of homes around the country (tens of thousands) and homeowners have been very slow to react, putting homes and residents in real danger.

Infinity Cable recall Brisbane

Infinity cable recall

The ACCC recalls different electrical products and equipment several times a month, most of the time the distribution of the product is minimal before the recall is initiated. Occasionally, however, products are not found to be faulty until later and distribution is more widespread.

In the case of the Infinity cable recall, the response can be described as traveling at a snail's pace. Authorities fear it will take a major incident like a house fire or death to get homeowners to sit up and take notice.

The cable recall was issued in August 2013 and since only 5% of homes affected have had repairs or replacements carried out. The cables insulation has been found to be at fault it may degrade over time leading to the risk of electrical shock or fire.

Used in the wiring of homes across the country from April 2012 to August 2013 the Infinity cable (and Olsent branded Infinity cable) recall is thought to have stalled due to the extent of the work needed to replace the cable and the vague nature of cost recovery involved.

What to do if you suspect your home has Infinity electrical cable?

In Brisbane, homes which had electrical wiring work done during 2012 or 2013 could possibly be fitted with the faulty cable.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CHECK FOR THE CABLE YOURSELF.

Check with the electrician who carried out the work for the product used, or enlist a licenced electrician to check your home's wiring. If it is found that you have Infinity or Olsent cables in your home you will need to contact the builder or installing electrician and ask for replacement or repairs.

We strongly advise that you take action if you suspect your home has the cable. Any delay could be hazardous.

The team at Moreton Bay Solar Air Electrical can send out a licenced electrician to check your wiring if you are unable to contact the contractor who put it in or are unaware of who did the work. Contact our electrical team on 07 3883 2119 or complete our booking request today.
