Defective solar DC isolators still causing fires

Faulty DC isolators fitted to solar PV systems throughout Queensland are still causing damaging fires despite repeated recalls and ongoing warnings from authorities and those in the solar industry. The defective ISO-MAX DC isolator switch was recalled early in 2012, in the years since several other brands and models have been recalled due to issues and the resulting fire risk.

Many homeowners are yet to take action over these potentially deadly solar components in spite of the danger posed to their homes and families. It is very important to turn the solar PV system off immediately if you find that your system is fitted with any of the following DC isolator switch brands:

  • ISOMax
  • AVANCO
  • GEN3
  • SPM
  • NHP
  • PVPower

Contact your solar installer to arrange for a replacement switch or, if for any reason this is not possible, call a licenced electrician experienced in solar power for a quality, reliable substitute part.

All of the above solar DC isolator switches were recalled due to inadequate insulation allowing moisture into the internal parts causing possible overheating.

Regular solar PV system maintenance

Due to the general weathering of solar PV system components including mounting systems, panels, solar inverters and associated cabling, regular maintenance is essential. Routine checks will also uncover any potential issues before they become larger or begin to affect the efficiency of the solar power system.
